چکیده

We address the hypothesis that fish that grow rapldly as larvae also grow rapidly as juveniles. Winter flounder Pleuronectes amerlcanus were reared from hatching through the larval period and up to 2 mo into the juvenile period. Successive cohorts of fish which metamorphosed on the same day were pooled and measured at weekly intervals during the early juvenile period. Growth rates of larvae and juveniles were inversely related. This resulted in compensation in size-at-age by juveniles that grew relatively slowly as larvae. Although the complete analysis of juvenile growth rates was confined to Weeks 1 to 4 following metamorphosis, an analysis of early metamorphosed cohorts for which 3 additional weeks of measurements were available revealed that juvenile growth rates exhibited during Weeks 1 to 4 were maintained during Weeks 5 to 7. Among these early metamorphosed cohorts there was evidence that size-at-age converged during Weeks 1 to 7 of the juvenile period. Our results suggest that size advantages gained during the larval period can be lost in the early juvenile period. This is important because sizeand growth-dependent processes are known to directly affect survival and reproduction. If growth compensation is general, future studies which examine the consequences of size-dependent phenomena during the larval and juvenile periods of fishes will need to integrate the dynamics of growth in both periods rather than considering them in isolation.

This study was carried out to investigate the effect of replacing fish meal protein with fermented soybean meal (FSM) in diets on growth performance, feed utilization, morphological parameters, body composition, activities of antioxidant and digestive enzymes and also blood biochemistry of juvenile olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus). Five isonitrogenic and isolipidic diets were prepare...

Linking larval history to juvenile demography in the bicolor damselfish Stegastes partitus (Perciformes: Pomacentridae).

Otolith-based reconstructions of daily larval growth increments were used to examine the effect of variation in larval growth on size and age at settlement and post-settlement growth, survival and habitat preferences of juvenile bicolor damselfish (Stegastes partitus Poey). During August 1992 and 1994, newly settled S. partitus were collected from Montastraea coral heads and Porites rubble pile...

Juvenile compensatory growth has negative consequences for reproduction in Trinidadian guppies (Poecilia reticulata).

Compensatory or 'catch-up' growth may be an adaptive mechanism that buffers the growth trajectory of young organisms from deviations caused by reduced food availability. Theory generally assumes that rapid juvenile compensatory growth impacts reproduction only through its positive effects on age and size at maturation, but potential reproductive costs to juvenile compensatory growth remain virt...

Temperature-mediated variation in early life history traits and recruitment success of the coral reef fish Thalassoma bifasciatum in the Florida Keys

Thirteen cohorts of the Caribbean reef fish Thalassoma bifasciatum were collected over 4 yr (2000 to 2003) in the upper Florida Keys, USA. Juvenile fish were censused and collected from replicate reefs shortly after settlement. The otoliths were examined to obtain early life history information such as timing of spawning, larval growth, pelagic larval duration, size-at-age, timing of settlement...

Relationship between larval and juvenile growth rates in two marine gastropods, <Emphasis Type="Italic">Crepidula plana</Emphasis> and <Emphasis Type="Italic">C. fornicata</Emphasis>

Previous studies on various marine mollusc species have shown that both larval and juvenile growth rates are substantially heritable, but few workers have examined the extent to which larval and juvenile growth rates covary. We examined the relationship between larval and juvenile growth rates in seven laboratory experiments conducted between 1986 and 1993, using the prosobranch gastropods Crep...
